Counting Inches #5

What an amazing response this month!

We’ve made it just past Sault Ste. Marie, ON and are on the last leg of the trip! Should arrive in good time for Quilt Canada 2016 at the International Centre for June 15-18th.
Maybe we can take a look around at all the places to see, and things to do that Toronto has to offer. Or maybe visit a quilt shop or two - just to get in the spirit of fabric and quilting.

Quilt Canada 2016 is going to be the place where the quilt action is! The vendors in the biggest Merchant Mall we have ever had are all listed here! Lectures and workshops galore! The National Juried Show will have over 100 quilts of Canada's finest works of art, and there are other superb quilt shows as well!

The 47 guilds/groups reporting inches have outdone themselves this year. All those charity quilts have helped get us as far as we have. It’s so great to hear of the inch counts that come from these charity quilts - great job!

Counting Inches #4

You are doing great counting the inches across Canada!

With all those quilt measurements tabulated, we made it to the outskirts of Thunder Bay, ON. We are well on our way to Toronto for Quilt Canada 2016 at the International Centre June 15-18th.

Great job to everyone who has been checking in! We now have 44 guilds/groups from all across Canada participating. There have been a lot of reports of quilts being made for various charities. This is the best news!

Although some guilds have reported a lower number of inches than in the fall (mainly because of snowbirds who go away to quilt and of course, soak up the sun), we have still managed to almost get as far as expected. We are right on track for an arrival just in time for Quilt Canada 2016.

Counting Inches #3

Great news!

After totaling up the inches from December and January meetings, we are able to announce that we’ve made it as far as Winnipeg, MB. This is amazing as there were some guilds who didn’t have a meeting in December.

It’s a good thing we are making progress. Going through these COLD months (and also the colder provinces right now), we sure need all those quilts to keep warm!

Try Out a Long Arm or Mid Arm Machine at Quilt Canada 2016

Do you machine quilt? Would you like to machine quilt? Do you sometimes experience frustration trying to ram that big quilt under your domestic machine? If you know there is an alternative but you really don't know much more than that, or you want to learn more about these machines, we have the solution for you at Quilt Canada 2016! Read down to the end to find out the best part!

Handi Quilter has generously donated for your use a classroom of Sweet Sixteens for you to try! The best part is the workshops are only 3 hours in length and the topics vary to suit your needs. Sweet Sixteens are considered a mid arm machine that you can sit down at.

It gets better, Handi Quilter is also bringing in an Avanté long arm machine that the instructor will demonstrate in lecture style with a projector and big screen so you can sit in your chair and see close up exactly how she does her quilting. And these lectures are only 3 hours in length so you still have oodles of time to head over to the Handi Quilter booth and try an Avanté, take in the quilt shows or visit the merchant mall!

Did I mention that we are bringing in their top instructors in the industry? We are, Amy Von Gurp and Sue Patten are coming to teach! They are both teaching 8 different workshops/lectures which gives you 16 opportunities to get informed and try mid arm and long arm quilting.

Be intimidated no more! Come and learn how to use rulers safely and properly to finish your quilts. In this class we will be exploring the different ways you can use a ruler to finish any quilting projects from clam shells to feathers and background fills.

In this class we will explore ways of using modern quilting designs and techniques on traditional quilts. We will be using a variety of tools that include rulers, computers and micro handles.

This new class will take six design concepts and turn them into DOZENS of designs for every area of the quilt top. Sue will teach the glass to go beyond what they see to discover what each design can be if you add, alter, delete and change it. This class takes each design concept and creates blocks, borders, sashing, background, and edge-to-edge designs or all over designs, covering the complete quilt - all in one class. Students will have the chance to share a design they use all the time and have it transformed into a multitude of variations to fit every area of a quilt. This is a fast paced, all out fun and exciting class that will leave students with a whole new way of looking at their designs and the designs they will learn in other classes. Come see beyond what's there and discover what any design can become as we Add, Alter, Delete and Change the way we design and quilt!!!

Counting Inches to Quilt Canada 2016 #2

Thanks to all the guilds who have submitted inches since our last report. We’ve had some interesting quilts that have been measured - from Meals on Wheels placemats, to comfort quilts, to quilts as gifts, as well as guild Show and Tell quilts.

With this good response, we have travelled out of Alberta along the Trans Canada Highway and into Saskatchewan, not quite enough to get us to Regina (where I had hoped to get to on this leg of the trip).

A project that was shown at
Temiskaming Shores Quilters’ Guild meeting.

Common Threads QG (Orleans, ON) This quilt was done by Sherida Giddings.
Pattern is called Fire Island Hosta Queen by Judy Niemeyer.
Custom quilted by Johanne Moore. It was 400 inches.

This quilt was given to the
West Haldimand Hospital for their annual auction.
It raised $1,700.

Counting Your Inches Across Canada - Part 1

You know the saying 'back by popular demand?' YOU let us know that you did not want us to retire the counting of the inches. You emailed, called, dropped in to our guilds, threw spools of thread at us, followed us around with tape measures (may be a slight exaggeration here). But you told us you loved doing this national challenge! You were heard, so the challenge is back and we are running behind so we need your help if we are going to make it!
Marilyn Michelin, a former board member, has kindly agreed to look after this project for us and she is excited! Over to you Marilyn:

There’ll be no Lollygagging along the way this year!
As we are a little late in starting, we still have managed to get enough inches from 10 guilds to get us to just outside Calgary, Alberta on our way to Toronto, Ontario, where Quilt Canada 2016 is being held.

After having had a wonderful time at Quilt Canada 2015, we leave the University of Lethbridge to travel north.

What a wonderful group they were - welcoming, energetic, and amazing! We met lots of new friends at the show and now can’t wait to get to Toronto to see some of them again and make some more new ones.

Cactus Rose Quilters' Guild (Medicine Hat, AB) shared their October meeting on facebook - a wide variety of quilts and sewn objects were shown.

Quilt Canada 2016

Are you ready? Are you as excited as we are?

Quilt Canada 2016 broke the mold! We changed things up, made it bigger, made it better and we did it to make every quilter like you HAPPY!

How you ask? First we found some pretty amazing sponsors! Check out this incredible door prize!

We are offering a slew of workshops.

Janome has once again given overwhelming support to provide domestic machines for all workshops that require them.

Handi Quilter is supplying Sweet 16's for classrooms, and a long arm machine for lectures!

The workshops are so varied and so fantastic! And guess what? We did not make them all the same price this year! We have priced them so that there are workshops for every budget!

We added lectures! Yep, that's right, we have our incredible teachers offering lectures throughout the four days too!

Don't freak out but we are having a Quilter's Night Out! We can't say too much right now, but Jane Sassaman is going to be giving a talk!

Okay, our Merchant Mall is insane! We keep getting more and more merchants so we keep making the shopping area bigger and bigger! We will be releasing the names of vendors very soon.

We haven't even talked about the quilt shows yet! Our National Juried Show hilights the best in Canada, our concurrent shows demonstrate the incredible talent our country has in quilting.

The fact that we are at the International Centre in Toronto ON is the icing on the cake. The place is huge! All one level and minutes from the hotels, and tons of parking!

Seriously, if you haven't booked your workshops, lectures, hotel... don't wait too long. This is going to be the conference of all conferences!

Quilt Canada 2016 is LIVE!

Yes you heard it hear. We are ready to show you what we have planned for Quilt Canada 2016!
We are landing in Toronto ON from June 15-18, 2016 ready to knock your socks off. We have so much fun planned for every quilter that walks through our doors! Our shows, the workshops, lectures, the National Juried Show, and of course the best Merchant Mall ever! This is the conference of all conferences, the show of all shows, the place where every quilter needs to be.
