Canada's Big Quilt Bee

You heard it here, Canada is launching a BIG QUILT BEE in celebration of Canada's 150th!

We think Canadian quilters are up for the challenge in reaching a goal of  quilting 1,000 quilts for kids in care at Ronald McDonald Houses across our nation!

What can you do?  Make a block, make a top, come out to our conference and help quilt during the BIG BEE June 14-17th. Cheryl Arkison has kindly let us use her 'slab block pattern'. Thanks Cheryl!

Jill Buckley designed our awesome logo for us, thanks Jill!

Here you will find out all the pertinent information that includes how to make the block and top, and what to do when you have made them.

Some of the fabric lines aren't coming out until November, but others are out now. Below are the links and some images of some of the fabrics to be used in the slab blocks.

If we have missed a Canada 150 fabric line, pls let us know at socialmedia@canadianquilter.com.

Canada's 150th Mystery Quilt, New Block

Cantik Batiks/CSM have just released their newest block for their Mystery Block celebrating Canada's 150th birthday. It is beautiful. The Canada Mystery Quilt is designed by Shania Sunga and is going to be breathtaking representing our provinces and territories.

North West Territories – Block 4

Northwest Territories is located north of the 60th parallel with an estimated population of 43,537.

Adventure tourism attracts photographers and outdoor enthusiasts to the “Land of the Midnight Sun”

Hudson’s Bay Company had used the region as part of its trading area before the governance
of the North- Western Territory was assigned to the company in 1859. The British made no effort to assert sovereignty over the aboriginal people of the area.

In 1862 during the Stikine Gold Rush, part of the North-Western territory, became inundated by
American Miners. To prevent any resulting claims, Governor James Douglas declared the area a
British Territory.

In 1868, shortly after Canadian Confederation (July 1, 1867) The Hudson Bay Company agreed
to surrender its vast territory to Canada. However it was not until July 15, 1870, that the transfer
to Canada was made. On that date the North-Western Territory became part of the newly created
Northwest Territories.

The world’s longest ice road is in Northwest Territories stretching from Tibbitt Lake, 70 east
of Yellowknife to Contwoyto Lake, nearly 600 km.

Mystery Blocks for Canada's 150th Birthday

Canada Mystery Quilt, designed by Shania Sunga, to celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday will consist of 13 Blocks featuring 10 Provinces and 3 territories of Canada, Quilt size will be  48" x 58". Beginning September 2015 and finishing April 2017, a ready to go shop kit consisting of the pattern and fabric will be available. Shania Sunga has captured the imagery of the incredible beauty Canada has to offer.

Nova Scotia – Block 4

Nova Scotia is Canada’s second smallest province and is located on the southeastern coast of Canada. The province includes Cape Breton, a large island northeast of the mainland and another 3,800 coastal islands, including Sable Island. Nova Scotia has over 3000 lakes and 7,500 km of rocky coastline.
The name Nova Scotia is Latin for “New Scotland,” reflecting the origins of some of the early settlers. Given its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Nova Scotia’s economy is largely influenced by the sea, and its harbours have served as military bases during many wars.
The Bay of Fundy, famous for extreme tides, is a popular location for whale watching. Humpback whales become very abundant mid-June off the shores of Nova Scotia. The Humpback has a distinctive body shape with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head. It is known for breaching and other distinctive surface behaviors, making it popular for whale watchers.
Peggy’s Point Lighthouse (also known as Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse) is in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, which is an iconic Canadian image. The first lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove was built in 1868 and was a wooden house with a beacon on it. That structure was replaced by the current lighthouse in 1914. It stands 15m high (49ft). The old wooden lighthouse became the keepers dwelling until it was damaged by Hurricane Edna in 1954 and was removed.
